Before semester starts

During semester break, I was looking through what kind of projects i would like to work on for my FYP. I am quite interested in beauty brands and self-care brand, so I was planning on further expand on a local skincare brand called Lumi. I have done some motion graphics based off this brand and this brand is quite aligned with my style, so I would like to apply my skills in creating some 3d product showcase video, and conceptual pop-up booths.

Figma Board

Week 1

Figure 1.2 Idea brainstorm

After consulting my idea with Ms Anis, she thinks it's not within my field of specialisation and it might not fit the criteria as an Animation as my idea is leaning towards the graphic design work. So, i decided to collab with a Graphic Designer to carry out my idea with me. So I found Riko Matsuyama to collab together to create a brand or campaign, and i will be incharged of the animation part.

Week 2

Figure 1.3 Idea refinement

After gathering our thoughts together, we refined our ideas by researching on the objectives, problem statements, and solution to solve the problem.

Figure 1.4 research and possible outcomes

We did research and look for the possible outcomes for the brand. We did research on needs and wants of women, to implement them into our brand. We also searched for some brand references, product references to design our brand design and product design. We started drafting our brand identity to help solidify our path as we go on. We also made sure to address the problem statement and come up with solutions to solve the problems faced. An additional outcome from my side is I was planning the mascot for the brand.

Figure 1.5 Brand concept ideation

From our research, we have developed 3 brand ideas which we ended up choosing the first concept. This concept mainly focuses on inclusivity for creating products designed with universal accessibility in mind, and include braille labels on both product and packaging.

Figure 1.6 Outcomes from animation

So i have thought of giving the brand a mascot which adds on some friendly vibe to the brand. The animation for this brand can be developed from either a 3D story-based animation video or a 3D product showcase animation video.

Figure 1.7 Contextual research based on the brand identity

While creating the brand identity, we also did a thorough contextual research based on our direction.

Week 3
Figure 1.8 Art Direction discussion

We mainly did discussion on the colour palette as it should be user friendly to visually impaired people as well, so we tried on the Protanopia who is red coloured blind, and Deuteranopia who is green coloured blind and we managed to come to a middle ground and created a colour palette that best suit everyone.

Figure 1.9 Brand colour palette

Then, we came up with a more neutral colour tone rather than having super pop colours. Then I have come up with a storyboard of of my animation. I have also looked for a lot of references for the social media animation.

Figure 1.10 Typography

We have also chosen a large, clean and rounder font for the body font, so it's friendly to the low vision impaired people. Since it's an elegant brand, we cant rly use a san serif font to be the brand font, so we chose to use a serif font but with thicker strokes.

Figure 1.11Theme, typography and brand name

We have chosen the water themed to give out the quiet luxurious, and calming vibe, therefore the brand name resembles the river word, so we decided to name it after this and also added the -elle word to make it more elegant.

Figure 1.12 First storyboard

We have also decided to opt for a more premium yet affordable brand position in the market. therefore this brand has elegance where it is supported by soft lightings, and slow camera movements. To show our USP in this video, we tried to look for brands that have poorly designed products to have a contrast compared to ours.

Week 4
However, the comparison between 2 products is actually quite a rude behaviour, it doesnt give off the luxurious vibe therefore, I had to think bt how i should do my animation. Ms Anis suggested that i should make my animation more elegant vibe to match the branding, since we have set our brand to be more premium so it should deliver the same vibe.

Figure 1.13 References and rough sketches

I have also done some extra research for my product design idea for each product. I implemented ergonomic designs on the product for customers to fulfil my main USP of this brand.
I started some rough sketches of the products here. I have also looked for some social media layout inspiration for our brand, so i could imagine what kind of animation i can do for my products.

Figure 1.14 Final product list in the gift box

Figure 1.15 New storyline

This story is to showcase our brand product's functionality, and how to use it. However, there is still some comparison storylinein there, so I had to change it again.

Figure 1.16 Key elements in a luxurious video

I looked for some video references for some inspiration and found out that most of the videos are in slow and subtle movement. The lighting is also quite warm and the overall setting should be darker.

Week 5

Product Design Sketch

Figure 1.18 Reed Diffuser design

Figure 1.19 Aroma roll on design

Figure 1.20 Tea pack design

Eyemask will be made in silk and just a regular eye mask shape and size.

Week 6

It’s my first time animating products, so i was having some hard time to think of the animation and transition of the products, my mind was just going all over from watching too many promotional videos.I have created a new storyboard by using images and videos to show what i want to showcase for a better reference.

Week 7

Proposal presentation

Week 8

In this week, Riko and I went out to do some survey on the size of our products and gift box, we went to shops that sells similar product like ours to measure the right size for us.

These are the measurements that we have decided.

3D Modeling

Week 9

Due to time constraint, we had to cut down some products and animation scenes to fit the tight schedule.

The updated product list would be:

  • Reed Diffuser (total 3 scents, but only the signature scent will be in the animation)
  • All-Hour Mist
  • Roll-on Aroma oil

Figure 2.1 Product modeling

I imported the sketches and references to create the product model in Blender.

Week 10

Figure 2.2 Water ripple on a plane ( Tryouts )

Mr. Kamal did a demo for me on how to create the wave pattern on a surface for me to used as the platform for the products.
Figure 2.3 Roll on Aroma oil
Making sure that the mouth of the roll on is not sharp, so use bevel to curved it.

Figure 2.4 trying out water simulation for scene 1

i have to subdivide more in order to produce a smooth water effect. However, when i tried in my laptop, my laptop couldnt handle that high render, so unfortunately i can only do the max which is 100x subdivide, if i go on further my laptop crashed easily. The problem of the fluid is that the fluid flows smoothly across the plane for the first few seconds but after that it becomes chunky and thick. I tried many times solving it, but i just wasted more time, so i figured i m not going to use the scene, so i just ove on with the unaffected scene only.

Week 11

Figure 2.5 making braille label

There were some problems with the braille dots due to the rounded face projects on a flat/curved product surface cannot be done. Mr.Kamal told me to make the braille dots from a plane and use solidify to let it pop out instead of just a flat surface.
Figure 2.6 Lattice before shrinkwrap

I had to try a few methods like using Lattice and then shrinkwrap to put the braille on the product surface, but it didnt work. The dots seemed to be uneven when projects on the product surface, if i only use shrinkwrap modifier, so I searched for help and my friend told me must use lattice first before shrinkwrap modifier, then i applied on the surface of the braille to make it smooth and rounded edges, so I managed to create a smooth round dots.

Week 12
Figure 2.7 Shorten inner face of body bottom

Shortening the inner face of the body so the bottom is able to see that it is made of glass as well.

before
after
Figure 2.7 Making the cap grip

I couldnt do this perfectly, so I had to ask Mr.Kamal how to do round indent cap. So Mr. Kamal gave me a tutorial session.

Figure 2.8 3d print product

The results are not ideal, the diffuser is too round and is harder to grip, the mist and roll on are too small in size, the braille dots are too small to be seen too so i had to rearrange the sizes, and reprint again.

Week 13

Figure 2.9 making materials

By trying out some tutorials to create the frosted glass materials, I have tried the procedural frost glass, however, the results did not appear to be what we want (as we can see from the lighter colour model), so i opted for the plug-in frost glass material.

Figure 2.12 Product packaging uv layout

After making the box, I exported the UV layout for Riko to put in the materials according to the size of the packging and box, then it will be exported out and import into blender agn to make it as a material on that face of the product.

Figure 2.18 Braille label shrinkwrap problem

Figure 2.19 Adjusting braille label by using Lattice

At first, i decided to use shrinkwrap method to wrap the braille dots on the product bodies, however, it appeared to be somehow crooked and not smooth when materials are applied. To solve this problem, I tried using Lattice first before applying shrinkwrap directly, and it turned out to be better.

Figure 2.20 Updated Storyboard

Figure 2.22 Setting up the ending scene

Applied frame in this scene to show our brand has this framing element.

Animation

Figure 2.23 Scene 1 animation + composition

By using Dynamic paint I anymated the water droplet and ripple

Figure 2.24 Scene 2 animation +composition

Figure 2.25 Creating mist spray

By using particles, i create the spray particles and adjusted the value and spray speed

Figure 2.28 Scene 3 animation +composition
The material of the bottom plane is water, so these scenes are actually showing water flowing.

Lighting

Figure 2.28 reference for lighting for 2nd scene

Figure 2.29 Lighting adjustment for scene 2

  Figure 2.30 Before

At first, scene 3 is supposed to be orange but i feel the colour orange is too pop, it will affect the entire modd of the video.
  Figure 2.31 After

  Figure 2.32 4th scene
  Figure 2.33 1st scene

After Effects
  Figure 2.34 1st scene

For the first scene, I used a song that best suits this video, however the climax only starts at 15th seconds, which i have to fill up some spaces, so i decided to add on some words to guide people through the video as well.

  Figure 2.33 After effect edits

After rendering all the scenes, I put them together in After effects, and the scenes turned out to be very  fast, I had to keep using time remap to slow down the pacing.

Amendment after feedback from presentation

Figure 2.34 Reedit the blender particles to a straighter and sharper line when comes to spraying mist

Changed the pattern of spray when spraying compared to the previous one is more of a straight line when it sprays but not in circular form anymore.

Figure 2.5 Adjust animation and lighting

Fill up the space with some graphic elements and more lotus flower, I have also adjusted the lighting and animation to make it brighter and smoother.

  Figure 2.36 Adjust time pacing

Used time remap to adjust the pacing to become slower
