Design Principle

Day 3 11.01.2022

Today, Dr Charles let us design 2 artworks using the design principle that we had learnt last week using a song as a timeframe.
The songs that Dr. Charles played had some pop and upbeat feeling so it led me to draw flowy lines as my mood got carried by the song.

Feedback :
Dr. Charles commented it was interesting, there's flow and rhythm broken by a large barrier in the center, the flow is interrupted. It can also be creating gaps to block the flow instead of an object.

Feedback:
Interesting movement in the center dividing 2 different shapes ( triangle and diamond shapes), quantifying the shapes makes difference between balance and imbalance. It is somewhat asymmetrical and yet balanced.

EXERCISE

Task: Choose 2 principles from all the design principles that we have learnt and create 1 design for each principle.

For this exercise, I have chosen Movement and Contrast from all the design principles that I have learnt.

Artwork 1 -MOVEMENT

Visual research
In design, Rhythmic movement has to do with the way the eye naturally moves throughout the design. We can strategically use lines, forms, colors, and other design elements to guide your viewer's eye throughout your design in a specific way—a rhythm, if you will—which, ultimately, creates a sense of movement. Movement shows action and creates a feeling of motion within a composition. In two-dimensional works of art, action must be implied. Implied action in a painting creates life and activity.

Repetition also creates movement. In this picture, the color of the gowns is repeated, leading the eye into the painting. The pattern on the floor also creates repetition. Implied action is created, giving a feeling of movement.

Idea exploration and description

I personally love killer whales a lot. It is my favourite marine animal of all time. Hence, I decided to design a drawing with it. As I know about orcas, they live in pods, and of course, they hunt for prey together. There are many ways to do their hunting. As highly intelligent predators, orcas work together in coordinated attacks to create waves that can knock prey off floating ice into the water. Orcas have even learned the dangerous trick of beaching themselves to catch sea lions in Patagonia before wriggling back into the water.

In this artwork, I illustrated the "bubble-net feeding" which is one of the ways that orcas use to hunt for prey. There are two main phases of carousel feeding, a cooperative hunting method in orcas, the herding phase and the feeding phase.
In the herding phase, the orcas surround a school of herring and herd them into a tight ball. They tighten the ball by blowing bubbles, flashing their white underside and slapping their tails on the surface. They move the ball of herring toward the surface of the water before initiating the feeding phase. During the feeding phase several orcas begin to eat while the others continue herding the fish to maintain the ball. The feeding orcas whip their tails into the ball to stun and kill several herring at a time. The dead and stunned herring are then consumed and their heads and spines discarded.

First Outcome:
For my first outcome, I have just done the rough sketch of the killer whales which shows repetition. Even though it looks like it is moving in a circular movement but in the big picture it actually shows more Repetition than Movement.
Feedback by lecturer: Dr. Charles said that if i wanna show Movement, i need to add some more details.

Final Outcome:

Merry-Go-Round

Feedback by Dr. Charles: Yes, it brings out the effect of Movement! An interesting piece of work!

Rationale
Hence, in order to show the orcas move in a circular movement to surround their prey, I drew circular lines to bring out the effect of it. In the end, I also coloured the whales to make them more visible by using copic sketch markers.

Artwork 2 -CONTRAST

Visual Research
As a principle of art, contrast refers to the arrangement of opposite elements and effects. For example, light and dark colors, smooth and rough textures, large and small shapes. Contrast can be used to create variety, visual interest, and drama in an artwork.

Contrast is the design principle we can use to create maximum impact. Strong tonal contrast is our most powerful tool when it comes to focusing attention.

For example:

The red apple stands out and immediately draws the viewer's attention

Contrast is quite difficult to master. Choosing the incorrect color combination will ruin the design. It is important to choose complementary colors, and ensure that they will not irritate people’s eyes.

For example:

These two reds are identical but when surrounded by its complementary, the second red appears more intense.

Idea exploration and description

For this artwork, I decided to do colour contrast to bring the viewer's attention to the focal point, which is the bleeding eye. This unique eye is in purple and has a pattern in it, named Rinnegan. I got inspired by the famous Japanese anime, Naruto Shippuden. It is one of my favourite anime as well. In this anime, the higher-ranked and powerful class of villains own this eye. Rinnegan is able to see the chakra flow within one's body and invisible barriers but is not able to see through obstructions. Rinnegan possessors are able to master any jutsu as well as five nature transformations. In order to show contrast, I choose to use acrylic paint as my main medium of art. The picture below is one of the villains who possesses Rinnegan in Naruto Shippuden.

First Outcome:

I did a rough sketch of the bleeding eye and decided to paint the eye with lilac colour. Of course, the puddle of blood is in red and the background in black.

Feedback from lecturer: When i have decided what i wanted to do and consulted Dr. Charles, he wanted to let me learn on my own and told me to give it a try. Hence, I coloured it.

Final Outcome:

Evil But Weak Inside

Feedback from lecturer: It does contrast as the red and purple stand out from the black background!

Short Rationale
The Rinnegan is vertically drawn due to its uniqueness as a third eye of one's body. The reason why I make it bleed is that all villains went through a lot of pain and struggles before they turned into a villain. A Rinnegan user is said to have control over life and death itself, which makes only the strongest of characters worthy of this eye. Therefore, this bleeding eye not only says that they are cruel but also they are hurt inside. The black background demonstrates the dark history of the owner of this eye. Therefore, they show colour contrast.

Reflection
It is a very simple artwork since I have just started learning design work. I wanted my first design work to be something that I can relate to and one of my favourites so I can keep it as a memorial. All of the principles I have learnt may confuse me in some ways sometimes because your intention on applying that particular principle onto that artwork may not show the effect but it actually shows the other principle. From the research that I have done, for repetition, in some artwork, it shows movement as well. Hence, sometimes I can say that design is quite an interesting thing to pursue as it gives you plenty of ideas once you have brainstormed. Like, the idea just pops out in your mind out of nowhere!!

Applying colour contrast is easier to be said than done. Why? We have to make sure that the outcome does not irritate viewer's eyes, the colours match each other, and many more. It requires a creative mind to do a different kind of design work. Therefore, I will look more into different design work to improve myself as I have always wanted to design artwork digitally.
