Due to Chinese New year, Dr. Charles extended the deadline until week 5 for us to complete our work. During Chinese New Year, i have only done some research on Project 2.  Productive progress is all in week 5.

Sense of Place

Sense of place refers to the emotive bonds and attachments people develop or experience in particular locations and environments, at scales ranging from the home to the nation. Sense of place is also used to describe the distinctiveness or unique character of particular localities and regions. Sense of place can refer to positive bonds of comfort, safety, and well-being engendered by place, home, and, dwelling, as well as negative feelings of fear, dysphoria, and placelessness.

Here are some examples of places where i personally enjoy looking at or chilling at. However, everyone has their own definition for the sense of place. Everyone has their favourite place which is precious, meaningful, where memories are made with their loved ones. Some even keep it as a secret.

In general, sense of place describes our relationship with places, expressed in different dimensions of human life: emotions, biographies, imagination, stories, and personal experiences.

Idea exploration and description
Initially, i wanted to just do some simple drawing like a peaceful place, a lakeside view. With trees, ducks swimming in the lake, blue sky, a place where i always imagine myself chilling at with beautiful view.

When i took my time thinking about what exactly a place i should draw, i thought about my high school. Ever since i graduated from high school, i have been missing the good old times in high school with my friends. Everything that happened in class is still fresh in my mind, without forgetting a single small part of the memories made with my friends. Hence, i decided to draw a classroom as a remembrance, since a sense of place can be a place where we have huge attachments.

At first, i thought of drawing a scene, wishing to imply the things we used to do in class back in the good old times. A scene where a group of people playing poker cards, phones, the boys playing at the back of the class, girls gossiping, bookworms studying, all in a classroom, in one piece of work. However, i feel like it would be too messy to include all the information in one piece of work. So, i thought of putting it in a simpler way, by means drawing meaningful things on the tables.

This is a picture of my class in SMK Damansara Jaya, my high school.  I did not draw 100% according to how my classroom looked like, instead, i drew it based on my own imagination.

I have got inspired by some pictures i found and it all demonstrates a strong idea of one-point perspective.

I actually learnt how to draw a one-point perspective through watching this video. I used this video as a reference to draw.

Progress

First Outcome:

From my first attempt, i felt it looked really weird. i was not satisfied with the outcome. I know that my perspective is wrongly drawn that is why it looks weird. So, i looked up on the Internet to learn how to draw one-point perspective.

Second Outcome:

I watched a youtube video on how to draw space with a one-point perspective. Hence, i tried on a new piece of paper. The outcome looks much better than the previous. The sense of perspective is much stronger.

Feedback by lecturer: Much better. Every piece of work should have its hierarchy, what we artists want viewers' attention to be drawn to. " Which one is your table, Hoi Yee? You said this is a remembrance so u got to let us know what you want us to focus on."

Third Outcome:

After brainstorming on how to work on the hierarchy, i decided to paint the table in the middle blue and the rest brown colour. i have did some changes like putting volleyball instead of the football beside the largest table and some items too.

Before colouring it, I used my failed artwork piece as a trial and error for myself to test out the colour , so i won't make any mistakes on my actual piece. It is my first time painting in a proper way, I don't want to mess anything up, so it helped me as a guideline to paint nicely on my actual piece of work.

Fourth Outcome:

I have painted the tables and chairs considering the lighting coming from the right.

Fifth Outcome :

I have added some details on the board and outlined the small items to make it more stand out.

Final Outcome:

Finally, I have done the touch-ups and it is officially done.

Rationale

After deciding on drawing a classroom as a remembrance, I used the youtube video as guidance to finish this piece of work. Despite having the video as a guideline, i still change some little things that are similar to my actual classroom. I have added some small things on the table to indicate things that we used to do in class.

Firstly, i drew a blackboard with 2 information boards side by side. The notes drawn on the board are about Chemistry, one of the science classes i miss the most. Back in high school, Chemistry was my favourite subject because of the teacher that made me love Chemistry so much, it is also my best subject among all 10 subjects in SPM. On the top right corner of the board, i have written " 40 days to SPM" is to tell that i was really focused on studying for my SPM. On the left side of the blackboard, i have names written under "Tidak Hadir", because we always have at least 1 absentee every day. It would be weird to see a day with full attendance for 5 Belian. There was always events held in school where flyers were given to all classes and pasted on the information board for students to refer to.

The main focus of this piece of work is the blue table. The reason why i coloured it blue is to tell the viewers that that is my table and the stuff on the blue table are things that i had experienced before. For example, the blue water bottle has accompanied me through my high school days, blue is my favourite colour, it is also a reason why i painted the table in blue colour. I have drawn a volleyball next to my table is to indicate that i am a volleyball player, i love playing volleyball with my friends especially, during PJPK ( exercise )  period.

All jokes aside, our class is a class that all teachers hate. They dislike handling our class, because of our mischievous behaviour and constantly being absent. On top of that, my chemistry teacher is actually the head of the discipline department. For sure, we all bring phones to school for our own convenience.   I personally experienced my phone getting confiscated for a week by my discipline teacher. That is why i have a " Buku Disiplin" book with a phone next to it. Not sure how many times my name was recorded in the " Buku Disiplin ".

The football on the left side just reminds me of me and my friends used to play volleyball and the boys will be playing futsal during the PJPK period. Imagining it just reminds me of how beautiful the scene is. Also, the packet of potato chips means we always eat in class. Whatever food we all have, we always share it with everyone. Phones on other tables show that we all bring phones to school.

Last but not least, i have also considered the lighting in the classroom. The clock shows 12.10pm, so considering the lighting coming from the right side, i have lightened the shades on each top right corner of the tables, even the information board on the right is in a lighter tone compared to the board on the left. The tiny dark spots on the floor is trying to say there is dirt on the floor, indicating the classroom is not clean. I even darken some spots on the grey wall also to show the uncleaned wall.

Reflection
Through this project, i have learnt a lot especially from my peers. I sought help from them as i do not have an art background. They taught me how to draw things and do watercolour painting properly. From my first attempt, what i have drawn was solid proof of a beginner in the drawing. My friend told me that i should draw it based on a one-point perspective. Then, i looked it up on the internet and learnt how to draw a space based on a one-point perspective. From my second attempt, the artwork really does look so much better than the previous one.

To be honest, I really thank my peers for helping me out, they taught me about drawing one-point perspective, painting, giving me useful opinions. They have helped me a lot throughout this project, and of course, i have gained a lot of knowledge about painting. No doubt, i have gained a lot of confidence. Not lying, after my first attempt, I was really lost but thankfully, my friends were there for me.

I have come to learn that drawing is not as easy as you say, there are many things that we have to consider before we begin the first step such as the lighting, angles, different perspective, angles and etc.
