Lecture Report

Week 2 ( 08.04.2022)

Lecture Report 1 - Visual Study

For this task, i have decided to write about my all-time favourite animated cartoon character, Simba from the movie The Lion King. Firstly, it can be seen that this character is made up of regular shapes such as circles, rectangles, and triangles. From Simba's face, there are already 3 circles that have made up his facial structure, such as his pair of ears and his face. For its body, it is in rectangular shape as well as its legs.

As the main character of the movie, Simba has a very brown-ish gold-coloured fur compared to other lions and lionesses. In this movie, Simba is the King of Prideland, a defender of his home from external threats. Young Simba has yellow-gold fur all over its body which has differentiated him from the other lion cubs, for example, Nala, Simba's best friend.

When Simba grew older, his mane is in bright red colour creating a huge contrast with the brown-ish gold fur on its body. This has made Simba different and more outstanding compared to other lions in their group which has brought the audience's attention to Simba all the time.  For example, Simba's uncle, Scar. Scar's mane is black coloured and has lesser volume. One very good face feature that allows us to see that Simba and Scar both are a different kind of people is Simba's face is more rounder but Scar's is in triangular shape, a longer face. Not only that, their facial expression have very big difference, like Simba has a more kind and heart-warming smile whereas Scar's smile is more evil and uncomfortable to look at. From Simba's facial structure, there is no flaw but on Scar's face there is a scar on his left eye. Even Simba's eyes are in brownish-red colour but Scar's is in green. All of the differences show that Simba is on the good side, a hero trying to protect his homeland, whereas Scar the villain, always eyeing on Prideland and replacing Simba as the King.

Overall, the movie used bright colours such as red, yellow, orange, green as main colours which has given audiences positive and bright future vibe. That could be the reason why they made Simba's mane red colour. The most iconic scene is the sunrise at the beginning of the movie Last but not least, even though Simba's overall colours are very bright and contrary with others, but it blends in very well and harmonises with each and every character in the movie.

Week 3 ( 15.04.2022)

Lecture Report 2 - Chiaroscuro

In short, this song is about how the teen girl finally got her driver's license and is able to drive to find her boyfriend but unfortunately, the boyfriend has left for another girl. In this music video, there are many scenes that have demonstrated the idea of chiaroscuro lighting.

The scene chosen is when Olivia is driving with a strong emotional facial expression while singing the line " Guess you didn't mean what you wrote in that song about me". In this scene, They have used purple lighting to emphasise the strong emotions that she carries. From how the purple lighting shines on her face, we can see that they are bringing the audiences' attention to how heartbroken she is. This scene has perfectly shows she is driving, just like the song title ' driver's license'.

From these 2 pictures we can see that she is completely devastated by her relationship with her boyfriend. The lighting is focused on her face only, plus she sang the line " I just can't imagine how you could be so okay, now that I'm gone". In this music video, most of the scenes are chiaroscuro concept. This concept has helped enhance the sadness brought by her. The part where the light shines focuses on her facial expression.

Week 4 (22.04.2022)
Lecture Report 3 - Visual Types and Shots

1. Establishing
2. Bird's Eyeview

3. Frame within a frame

4. Medium Shot
5. Close-up
6. Worm's Eyeview

Week 5 (29.04.2022)
 Lecture report 4 - Fore-ground, middle-ground, background

1. Foreground

From this picture, we can see that the focus is on the character which is in the front. The background is pretty far away makes us bring our attention to the perosn in the middle.
2. Middle-ground
In this picture, we can see that the objects are in the middle, the tree trunk is in front and the forest is the background. There are contrasting colours between the people and the forest, which brings us to immediately see the people in the middle, especially the giant half body human on the left that has pinkish purple fire around its body.
3. Background

Here, although there is a person in front and the river is in orange colour, a very bright colour, these 2 look like the focus but the main focus is actually behind ( the background). Our attention will land on what is happening at the back which is further away from the character. On top of that, what is happening behind has a very bright colour which has a very huge contrast with the things in front.

Week 4 (22.04.2022)
Exercise: Chiaroscuro

Week 5 (29.04.2022)

Exercise: Chiaroscuro
Fig 2.2 Chiaroscuro tutorial 2, Week 5 (29.04.2022)

In this tutorial, I have learnt how to create shadow by using Pentool. I have learnt how to trace the shape and I can actually trace the shadow as well. This makes everything a lot easier and I can just fill the colour in.

Week 6 (06.05.2022)
Exercise: Colouring
Fig 2.3 Colouring, Week 6 (06.05.2022)

Week 7 (13.05.2022)
Exercise: Gradient
Fig 2.4 Gradient, Week 7 (13.05.2022)

A pretty interesting tutorial where we learn how to create gradient for an object. On top of that, special effect like grain texture was added too.
