Recommend 3 professional Motion Graphics with rationals and inspirations

1. Motion Graphics Portfolio

I really like the smooth flow of motion graphics, for example, the transition where the boy jumps and it switches from jumping to stepping on the foot drum. The colour choice is bright and catchy and maintained at only 4 colour choices.

2. A Brief History of Coffee

The reason why this video caught my attention is because of its interesting motion graphics, the editor has fit in all the graphics and ensured a smooth flow of motion graphics while storytelling. Besides, the colours chosen were appealing and understandable for the audience. For example, the pattern chosen on the graphics is appropriate and able to differentiate it from the other elements, just like the concrete pattern on the building wall. The video was short and informational which is appropriate for the audience, instead of a typical storytelling video which easily bores the audience easily.

3. Motion Graphic Animation: The Flow of Time

The entire video is simple and comfortable for the audience to watch. The choice of using only shapes to deliver the message has made the video simplistic and aesthetic to watch. On top of that, the editor has used a piece of calming music as background music, it calms the audience more and able to enjoy the video even more.

A personal burnout experience

Speaking of burnout, it would definitely remind me of what I have experienced last semester. For a total of 14 weeks, I have struggled with time management, meeting submission deadlines, assignments coming one after another, working a part-time job on the weekends, struggling with new ideas when the old ones got rejected by lecturers, and lack of proper rest and sleep. All these struggles had made me feel super burnout even when I am halfway through the semester already. All the late submissions and delays had made me suffer at the end of the semester due to more final projects attacking me right in my face. The entire semester was suffocating and draining, as I had 4 back to back morning 8am classes and part-time job during the weekend, I was mentally and physically tired throughout the entire semester.

Final Project : Animated Infographics

Dealing with anxiety and depression video by Minddistrict

Fig 1.1 Discussion in Miro and Google Doc, Week 3 (26.01.2023)

In week 3, we had a short meeting and discussed about the entire project visual. We broke down the script into a few parts and discussed how the visuals should look like to allow us to draw the visuals out in AI before animating them.

Fig 1.2 First Sketch , Week 4 (01.02.2023)

After breaking down the script, we have picked our parts and start working on our sketches. For my part, I have chosen the first few lines to work on.

Fig 1.3 Animated storyboard , Week 4 (05.02.2023)

A more detailed sketch was done in AI and exported in PNG files to have a better picture of how the entire video will turn out by compiling them later to have a feedback session with Mr. Martin.

Fig 1.4 Part that I am in charged of, Week 6 (14.02.2023)

In week 6, we have change of plans where we separated the team of 6 into illustration and animation team. In this way, the illustration would look more similar as only 2 person would be illustrating. I have decided to be in the animation team and took the part from scene 8 to scene 9. Originally, we were planning to illustrate and animate them according to the part we picked but considering the time we have left, the new plan works better.

After downloading the files, I arranged the layers properly to ease the animation process later.

Animation

Fig 1.6 Editing in AI , Week 6 (14.02.2023)

For this scene, I have made the plus sign explode into pieces, indicating that no medicine can cure burnt-out. The plus sign vibrates vigorously and explode.

Fig 1.7 Editing in AI , Week 6 (14.02.2023)

A simple float in animation is applied on the wordings.

Fig 1.8 Editing in AI , Week 6 (15.02.2023)

For this part, where I spent most of the time in, I had the minute hand of the clock rotate while the colour of the sky changes, indicating the change of time. At the same time, the ball changes emotion from being calm to mad. This scene indicates that the longer you work, or how much you work, doesn't mean you don't deserve a life to live.

After receiving Mr.Martin's feedback on our draft video, we had a short meeting and discussed the parts that we have to amend. We made listed it in a Google Document for easy reference. So here is the part that I have to amend. A lot to amend for scene 8.

Where the "No" sign appears by blinking to emphasise more on " there is no simple cure to burnout".

As the flask moves awkwardly because of 2 different scenes, so I have combined them into 1 scene so it will flow better.

Reflection

In this project, I have learnt a lot, especially the animation part, I was lucky to have become part of this group, everyone did their job as part of the group and contributed to the group to achieve the final project, we have to this far, and I would say it is a success! The video turned out to be simple and cute, and most importantly informative. The purpose of this video is to transmit important messages to the audience, and let the audience be connected with the video. Well, of course, there are struggles behind every work, where we all have trained to be MORE patient when animating. Every detail has to be paid attention to because a little mistake can affect the entire flow of the video, then, the video would turn out awkward or inconsistent. Consistency is the main key to animating a video. To achieve some effect, a lot of keyframes are required, and then comes to the speed, whether how fast you want the effect to flow in order to look smooth and natural, lastly, These steps take up a lot of time and there's a lot to animate, hence, animation is time-consuming. Well, it's not the end yet, you still have to check and trim the entire video, therefore, it takes long time to do animation.

God bless me in my major study next semester.
