Project 2

Week 2

In week 3, we were tasked to create a lyrics video in a group of 7, and during our tutorial class, Mr.Martin had given a demo on how to create a lyrics video in After Effect by using the song So What! by pink.

Fig 1.1 Creating lyrics in After Effect

Keyframes are added to create animation, to make the text or graphics move, this is also called Motion Graphics. To make it more interesting, we must study the rhythm of the song and try to follow the flow of the song by the use of emphasising the word in a sentence, and that will be the focus of that scene.

Exercise 3: Kinetic Typography

Fig 1.1 Made you look official MV

Fig 1.2 Made you look official lyrics video

After a few discussions among the team, we have decided to go with the song Made You Look by Meghan Trainer. We picked this song because of its trendiness and upbeat melody it has which will lighten up the audience's mood. We figured the upbeat melody in this song will make the lyrics video interesting.

Our group gathered together to discuss the art direction, references, and inspiration, colours and font to be used. All the information was then posted in Miro for easy reference. The colour palette revolves around the colour in the original music video in 'Made You Look' which are mainly soft bright and princess colours such as pink, purple, and yellow.

As it is a group task, we divided the song into 7 parts and we get to pick any part we wish to work on. Hence, I have chosen verse 2 to work on.

Fig 1.4 First line, Week 4 (31.01.2023)

Animation: Motion blur on the text when they come in, emphasising on "scene", where it enlarges to switch to the next scene.

Fig 1.5 Second line, Week 4 (31.01.2023)

Animation: Focusing on the word "sunscreen", it changes colour from orange to yellow which is the colour of heat.

Fig 1.6 Third line, Week 4 (31.01.2023)

Animation: Similar to scene 2, but the colour of the background changes , indirectly emphasising on the word "heat".

Fig 1.7 Fourth line, Week 4 (31.01.2023)

Animation: The word "steam" enlarges.

Amendment
After receiving feedback from Mr.Martin, He reminded me that I should keep my word spacing consistent. I should consider the word spacing for every scene throughout the video to maintain consistency.

Exercise 4: Motion Graphic Chart - Bar Chart

In today's class, Mr. Martin taught us about Motion Graphic Chart. We were assigned to create an option graphic chart after watching the recorded tutorial video.

Fig 2.1 Creating Motion Graphic Chart, Week 3 (26.01.2023)

Here, I have used lines to create the bars by increasing the thickness of the stroke.

Fig 2.2 Motion Graphic Chart, Week 3 (26.01.2023)

I have chosen a dark colour background for my bar chart and bright neon colour for my bars. Later on, I have added the title and the subjects on the x-axis.

Fig 2.3 Final Outcome, Week 3 (26.01.2023)

Then, I realised it's quite difficult to read the subjects and data in a dark background just like the normal light and dark theme. Of course, I have adjusted the letter fonts. So, I have changed the background colours to a lighter one to ease the readability.

Exercise 5: Vector / Character Animation

Practical 5: Vector / Character Animation
Today in class, we were taught to do some simple animation using After Effects by using the provided vector art.

Exercise 5: Vector / Character Animation

For our exercise, we are tasked to animate the vector design provided, and each of us is assigned to different vectors. For me, I was assigned to animate this vector art.

Fig 3.5 Separate in Different Layers, Week 4 ( 02.02.2023 )

First, I decide on the graphics that I plan to animate, then, I separated them into different layers so I can import them into After Effects for animation.

Fig 3.6 Import the AI file into AE, Week 4 ( 02.02.2023 )

Fig 3.7 Animation progress, Week 4 ( 02.02.2023 )

I have chosen the graphics listed below to animate:
  • Sun
  • Windmill
  • Clouds
  • Trees
  • Mountain
By adding keyframes, I made the animation and also the bouncing effect that is required. Lastly, not forgetting about adding motion blur and easing the keyframes to ensure the graphics move smoothly.

Feedback

Week 3 (26.01.2023)
Mr. Martin likes the font we chose, the size and colours are suitable as well, but reduce the puntuations. Some verses are messy and try to put some different font to create variations. He stated my part that, I should focus on a word in a scene to make it clean, or else the audience's would get confused.

Week 4 (02.02.2023)
Mr. Martin likes the Kinetic typography video. He suggested to change some composition and opacity when it comes to motion blur.

Week 6 (16.02.2023)
The line spacing and word spacing should be consistent. Ready to submit!
