Storyboard
For my storyboard, I have used many reference pictures to draw as i am quite bad at drawing, therefore, it took me a long time to complete my storyboard. On top of that, my animatics is quite detailed and smooth which it didn't have to be, but I had drawn a lot of frames for action, especially the training part to make it smooth. Well, I could say I am doing both drawing and animation at the same time. So, while drawing in the panels, I tried to view it in animation and exported it out as a result of my process.
These are the reference videos I have used throughout my storyboarding process:
For some details that I don't know how to draw, I traced them out from the reference I used and adjust the length of the legs as my character involves both young child and grown up adult.
Fig 1.2 Juggling action
By using the concept from animation fundamentals, I drew the extremes which are the left and right legs sticking out and the middle would be the standing pose. They are arranged layers by layers. After that, I felt weird with just the legs moving, so sometimes I tried to imitate the action and I know that there is body bending while juggling, so to make it natural, I make the character bend when the leg juggles.
Fig 1.3 Dribbling action
I used right leg as anchor point to draw the extremes for the left leg, vice versa.
Fig 1. 4 Last page of storyboard
As mentioned from the start, I drew frame by frame, some are hidden and to be used for animation but some are displayed as a panel. I tried to involve as many different shots as I could, to make the animation appealing.
Animatic
After finishing the storyboard, I redraw all the panels in the actual video size which is 1280x720.
Figure 2.1 Trial
After drawing the first scene shot 1, I tried to import it into Adobe Animate to do a test run.
After a few trial and error, I don't think I can animate in Adobe Animate, considering the time I have left, so I decided to just animate everything in Procreate as all my drawings are done in Procreate and with the animation assist, I can animate scene by scene and shot by shot. In the end, I will combine all the videos in Premiere Pro to add some effects.
Figure 2.2 Animating in Procreate
When drawing in the actual size, I layered each frame properly and test out the animation by controlling on the numbers. To make it faster, animate on 3, to make it slower, animate on higher number.
Figure 2.2 Animating in Procreate
Sometimes while animating, I realise their body figure is too stiff and it looks like a puppet, so i tried to imitate the action and adjust the body by tilting them.
Figure 2.3 Animate the ball
Lesser frame, faster the action, and since, I am doing animatics, it doesn't have to be smooth, So most of the time I draw the extremes only.
Figure 2.4 All frames in a picture
Especially this scene, it took me a long time to adjust because it involves moving as well, so I moved the background to make it natural that the character is dribbling across the cones.
Figure 2.5 Animation of dribbling
After drawing all the frames in the actual canvas size, I animate the dribble action on 3.
Figure 2.6 Animation done in storyboard
I dont know whether I was doing it right, the fact that I thought drawing frame by frame in storyboard and later on trace it out on the actual canvas size is easier, I did not have much time to think because I have not enough time to complete it. But at that point of time, all I could think of is to make the animation looks good so I drew frame by frame. While storyboarding, I picture the entire image in my mind and I just draw the entire action out. So, these 3 videos are the examples, and I only displayed the extremes in storyboard, the rest are hidden and used when animating the action.
Figure 2.7 Video editing in Premiere Pro
After drawing all the frames in the actual canvas size, scene by scene, shot by shot in Procreate, I then exported them out and compiled them in Premiere Pro to add effects and sound. I have asked my friend to do the voiceover for my character and look for related sound effects to enhance the animatics.
