Exercise 1&2

Instruction

Exercise 1

Exercise 1 Brief

For this exercise, we are tasked to choose a personal service app preferably from local and study the app in terms of functionality, good UX and bad UX design.

Fig 1.1 Template

For this Exercise, I have decided to opt for a local home services app called Blooms. Since a template was provided as a guide for us to execute Exercise 1, I decided to complete it in a Canva slide.  First, I listed out the main contents of the slide that i have to input, then, I began diving into the app's background and description.

Fig 1.2 Blooms app

I began to analyse the app page by page according to the requirements.

Fig 1.3 Affordance example

Affordances:
I analysed each page based on what users are allowed to do and the information they are provided in that page. For example: Users can scroll wide range of services provided by Blooms and choose their preferred service.

Fig 1.4 Signifier example

Signifier:
I analysed each page based on the icons and signifiers displayed on each page. For example: The menu navigation bar allows users to browse the services they need, get updated with the latest news or announces, Order tracker, user account settings, and crew page where OR codes for payment.

Fig 1.5 Feedback example

Feedback:
Any form of communication the app notifies the user is counted as a Feedback, in order to let the user know the progress. For example: The app double confirms with users if they want to log out of their account or cancel the action.

Exercise 2

Exercise 2 Brief

For Exercise 2, we are tasked to choose a shop that has established its own app preferably an app that is not very-well established in order for us to learn the good and bad UX Design. After a consultation with my lecturer, I have decided to opt for One UtamaSuperapp, it's an app for a Mall in Petaling Jaya where it's near to my living area and convenient for me to carry out my experiment too.

Fig 2.1 One Utama SuperApp

The One Utama Superapp is designed to enhance the shopping experience at 1 Utama Shopping Centre. This app features:

  • Navigation and information
  • E-wallet
  • ONECARD
  • E-Commerce
  • Events and Promotions
  • Green Initiatives
Fig 2.2 A Good UX Design example

This is one of the good UX Design example that I analysed, it is the home page of the app. It has a simple and clean layout which is also informative to ease users' readability. The consistent icon design and colour palette used are visually appealing to the users.

Fig 2.3 A Bad UX Design example

As one of ONECARD user, I was looking for the ONECARD page to check my ONECARD balance and redeemed points which I couldnt find and when I found out, I was able to check my ONECARD park credit in this park page. However, I was expecting the app to have a slot for ONECARD page to check its redeemed points and carpark credit.

Final Outcome

Reflection
From these exercises, i was introduced to the basics of UIUX design, It was quite an interesting experience, as I was tasked to study and analyse the apps in the market. Even though, I got confused with some terms or words they use in UIUX, but it is a fun experience that all of us in class misunderstood the meaning of it. I have found some apps that i experienced did not give me a good impression nor easy navigation. Some even have icons or buttons that made no sense. I got to experience the UI and UX experience, the pov of the user by using the knowledge i have as a UIUX Designer. I am able to determine a good and bad UI Design. I am sure with these experiences, it will benefit me later during final project, I will apply the knowledge i have learnt from these exercises in my project.
