Reflection

Experience
Honestly, I am always scared of every Wednesday 8am class because I know it's another time of getting rejected, and receiving criticism from Mr.Vinod, HAHAHA. Sometimes I wonder, is my design work really that bad? and I always have a lot of amendments to do after every feedback session, which is frustrating because I have other assignments to do as well, and I have to edit, edit, edit, and edit again, what is more, frustrating is that I have to try multiple times, sometimes the outcome is not even better than before T^T. In short, all design work requires patience, a wide exploration of design work, and a lot of thinking and analysis.

In this module, I was exposed to a lot of new things such as creating my own typeface, creating typographical sticker, formatting text, and things that I never imagined I would be able to do. Looking back to the past 3 months, although there was criticism and rejected design work, endless of amendments and edits to do, research and exploration to do, and sacrificing leisure time and sleep, but when I see some compliments from Mr.Vinod after all the hardwork, I feel relieved and happy. I enjoy the feeling of creating such a great job and is complimented by my lecturer because every time before class, I am always unsure of my own work, "Is this good enough?", "How to perfect it?', "Is this acceptable?", all kinds of doubts revolve in my mind. However, I have started to gain confidence the more design work I am assigned to do, as long as I manage my time well(HAHHAH).

Personally, Typography has taught me patience and confidence, being more observant of the little details, Academically, text alignment, utilising and balancing the grey matter and white space, type expresion, and creating interesting typefaces. All these have strengthened my technical skills and personal development.

Observation
After learning typography, I start observing the letter fonts and typefaces around me such as observing their difference in width and height, and thickness on each stroke. Whenever I pick up a magazine, I start to observe the text alignment on a page and the overall setting on each page before diving into the content. HAHAHA. When I observe one's typeface, I observe the steepness of the stroke-ends, thickness, the angle and the base structure because when creating a new typeface, all these have to be appropriately balanced in order to be able to use the typeface. There are many rules and regulations to follow just like the letterforms, it can't be overly dramatic but enough to be mesmerizing to catch one's attention. It's actually pretty interesting that now I am capable of understanding one's design work with the knowledge acquired in Typography and making my own judgments.

Finding
I did not expect Typography to involve such detailed work and effort to complete, I always thought that it was easy because I could just type out the letters and just draw the design of the letterforms I want, then there you go I created a new typeface, but HELL NO. Typography proved me wrong. In these past 3 months, I have found that there are many many small details in Typography that can't be ignored, even the tiniest detail can disrupt the entire composition of the design work. Good design work requires balance, in terms of the typeface used, size of the font, text alignment, type expression (whether it is able to imply the message intended to), grey matter and white space, all of these require us to take into consideration while placing all the part on a page. Designers have to ensure the readability of the text and the message intended to imply are at the optimum level.
