Tutorial exercises

In week 9, Mr. Martin taught us how to animate photoshop work in Adobe After Effects. In this class, I had fun getting used to the functions and the techniques to create animation.

Final Task : Self-Titled

Instructions

Week 11 (09.06.2022 ~ 16.06.2022)

Visual Research

 Fig 2.1 Inspiration, Week 11 (11.06.2022)

I was so excited to start this project because it's about myself and I couldn't wait to see the result. These are some interesting pictures that I have found on Pinterest to gain ideas and inspiration for my final task.

Progress

Fig 2.2 Google slides , Week 11 (11.06.2022)

To start off this task, I filled up the details about myself in the google slides as a guideline for myself to start my work. It has helped me discover my interest and thoughts which assisted me in creating my poster.

Of all artworks I have seen on Pinterest, these are the ones that attracted me and inspired me. These artworks are the closest to my idea too!!

Sketches

Fig 2.4 Sketches, Week 11 (13.06.2022)

#1: A girl standing on the ground staring at the sky which has a killer whale and a subtle face trying to touch the killer whale, with purplish-pink or blue clouds in the air giving out dreamy vibes.
#2: A side profile portrait and the marine life in the body creating a double exposure effect and a person standing the face staring at the sky with violin and musical notes sitting on the purplish-blue clouds.

Digital poster
Fig 2.5 First digital poster, Week 11 (12.06.2022)

This was the first digital poster I created based on the first sketch. The concept is the girl has 2 dreams one on ground and in the sky. Playing the violin is going to come true while the marine life in the sky is close yet far. The poster has a dreamy vibe and the girl on ground wishes to achieve her dream which is close yet far away from her, the little human walking towards the violin means she's getting closer and closer to the violin.

However, Mr. Martin told me to try out the second sketch because it requires more skills and the outcome would be better than the first poster.

Week 12 (16.06.2022 ~ 23.06.2022)

To execute the second design, I had to do some research again about the composition and I had to come up with a creative design to properly express my thought.

Above are the elements used in the second design.

Digital poster
Fig 2.10 Slice effect, Week 12 (16.06.2022)

For the portrait, I have decided to use the slice effect on the head making the elements flow out from the brain.

Week 13 (23.06.2022 ~ 30.06.2022)

Second attempt

Fig 2.12 Second attempt, Week 13 (24.06.2022)

In this attempt, I have removed the sliced part and added more clouds to give the flowy effect, the elements flowing out from the brain. I have added some purple and pink coloured clouds. The overall colour of the poster has become darker blu-ish purple. The background is more dark blue and the body of the portrait is more turquoise blue to attract the viewer's attention as it is the foreground.

Animation

After finishing up the poster, I imported the Photoshop file into After Effects to animate the elements.

Feedback

Week 11 (09.06.2022)
Mr. Martin told me to try out the second sketch because it requires more skills and the outcome would be better than the first poster.

Week 12 (16.06.2022)
Mr. Martin told me to remove the sliced head and let the clouds overflow and cover the edge of the sliced part.

Week 13 (23.06.2022)
Mr. Martin The elements are moving too fast, try to slow it down, overall it's nice.

Reflection

Well, I really enjoyed this task the most compared to the previous tasks because of its freedom in the title and the materials used. I really love this task because I can express myself, my feelings, and my thoughts in this piece of work. Even though it took up a lot of time to edit and mask and edit and mask, but without these, the outcome wouldn't have been this amazing. Every detail in this poster has form harmony together and the animation enhances the entire poster's perfection.

Wow, time flies. I can't believe 3 months have gone in just a blink of an eye. Throughout this journey, from zero knowledge about Photoshop to being able to create this poster and video, I am truly proud of myself. However, I still think that I have much more to do, to improve. I am sure this is just a start and there is more for me to learn and explore in order to become a designer in the future. Hopefully, the upcoming semester would go easy on me ( I doubt so...) but YES what a great learning journey with Mr. Martin. A huge shoutout to Mr.Martin for being a great lecturer and being there for me through this journey. He taught me how to perfect my design work and useful tips in Photoshop!
